“Like the sand that you find in the morning, in your pocket reminds you that a dream could have been more than a dream.”

Dream stealers. Infiltrating my subconscious. The blind man and his henchman, the  extractors. Sarah with her machine guns; she seems to know more than she is letting me on. The lady across the street, looking all whimsical and ethereal… But all viciously planning to implant  … to usurp my mind with their thoughts. “They will be coming and we don’t want to be here when it happens.” Urrrgh!

Ding-dong.

Kevin’s thoughts were interrupted again. He sat rigidly tall in his armchair, his nerves frayed. Not again. Another extractor.

No, no, I have to fight the hostile forces to regain my mind.

Ding-dong. The chime again. Livid, Kevin threw a chair at the door. Pow, thud, it hit the door and crashed to the floor. His breath heaving in rapid rhythm, Kevin cringed within him, all shook up by the recent chain of events. Bent over, he pored over his map again, intensely, dissociating himself from his surroundings. Out of the blue, ouch, he felt a prick on his arm, and a strange sensation coursed through his body. His mind went blank and he crashed to the floor.

Much much later…

Bright lights, they hurt his eyes and woke him up. He strained to block the glare.

Slowly, Kevin’s eyes gained focus. It seemed as if he had reached the edge of the world, or, or … some ocean. He turned his head slightly, and found himself on a deck chair. Seated on his left, Sarah, (was it Sarah???), laughing indecorously in a voice he could barely hear, taking a swig from some greenish wine glass bottle, dressed in garish resort wear with huge celebrity-style shades over her eyes. That next-door-lady-I-can’t-seem-to-shake-off, was curled up on another deck chair to his right. She seemed to have passed out.

The sound of swimming strokes. Someone was swimming furiously towards him in that infinity pool — the henchman with the blind master. No, no, …

“Get up, you slob!” Kevin was pulled up by his collar from the deck chair by wet hands. He gasped for air!

“Follow me!”

“I can’t move!”

“What do you mean you can’t move?!”

“I can’t seem to feel my limbs!”

Convulsed in anger, the henchman picked Kevin up and swung him over the edge of the pool, like a missile, towards the Esplanade, the Merlion roaring with its majestic aqua gush, Singapore’s famous landmark. Kevin felt weightless, as if he was floating on a cloud, lifted by some strange force.

To be continued…
