In Perth Again, Virtually: ASCILITE 2015
The last time I was physically present in Perth, Australia, was an angsty period in my life. It was the one and only time that I had permed my hair (see pic below). Today, I encountered Perth again — virtually! Through the Australasian Society for Computers in Learning and Tertiary Education Conference (#ASCILITE2015). [Note: Transcript is on the way! My apologies.] Vaguely, I had some notion of a conference going on in Australia but was occupied by a full schedule of life events. Maha Bali notified me about a session that Virtually…

3 days at Sloan-C ET4Online 2013
As an instructional systems designer/education researcher, I attended sessions at the Sloan-C Emerging Technologies for Online Learning with the goal to inform my professional development. In some organic fashion, my interests somehow coagulated into three main areas: 1. How do people learn: what’s the latest in educational psychology and how is it applied to online education? 2. How is instructional design and development enhanced by new technologies? 3. Scholarship of online learning and teaching: What interesting research is being done? Using what methods or instruments?Instinctively, I feel that these topics…

AERA 2012: Lessons Learned
Against the backdrop of the spectacular Vancouver Harbour, the AERA 2012 proceedings unfolded. Picture courtesy of Angi Shelton My schedule was very full and so, regrettably, I had limited opportunity to take in the magnificent sights, sounds and tastes of Vancouver. However, I can attest that what I saw this time around – I was in Vancouver in 2007 — was an improved Vancouver; cleaner, with a subway. My reflections that follow on AERA 2012 are attempts to think of how future conferences can be improved and what I take…

AERA CCM Oct 27-29
A short three days at D.C. for the AERA Coordinated Council Meeting. Besides seeing how AERA operates from the inside, I had a fantastic time getting to know the Graduate Student Council members, meeting new people and planning for the Vancouver meeting. I am so honored to have the privilege to serve right where I am. The Brown Lecture was on the first evening. Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings was the VIP. She delivered a message that was insightful. I’m always amazed at how much I can learn and make connections from…

AERA 2011 Learning Experience
AERA NOLA Apr 7-12. It is taking me a while to resettle into Syracuse. I feel out of touch with my dissertation writing after all my professional duties at AERA. But I wouldn’t have given it up for anything. This is an experience no formal course can ever teach me. I love meeting and working with people from other universities who are now my friends. When I go to AERA, I don’t feel alone or lonely; I belong to a community. Being a GSC rep will definitely count as a…

Lessons in Atlanta
Hurriedly I came, and hurriedly I left. To check out NAGC. It was interesting, attended by a large number of teachers, I think. It has been a long time since I’ve been in a gifted ed environment. I attended a session (amongst others) by Dr. Mark Runco, creativity research scholar, which was more a Q&A session. I must say I was surprised by his youthfulness. I seem to have this misconception that he is a distinguished elderly gentleman because of his extensive body of research. How wrong I was. ;-P…
