Deaf Meetings
Though my signing has improved, the flying hands at DC@PB by some people were too fast for me. I think being the only hearie, other than the little boy present, they were in THEIR world. No complaints because it helps me to understand what it is like for deaf people to be in a hearing world when we are the majority. I should be present at more meetings to improve my signing. At DAC’s picnic 6/4, there were a few more hearies who could sign very well. Everyone was welcoming…

Deaf Coffee 2nd Session 2-18-2011
[Img source: http://bit.ly/fpjGCO] I was tired but I went and meeting new people rejuvenated me. Michael and his family were there; there were a few people who I’d met at DAC and CNYRID. So I’m getting to know the community of Deaf and ASL interpreters. It dawned on me that my signing must be improving because Michael asked the other day if I needed voicing from the interpreter who was present. Tonight, at the coffee meet, an ASL student said I seem to be so comfortable with signing. :) I…

ASL Interpreting: A Cognitively Complex Challenge
CNY-RID Meeting. Feb 4. Six challenges now face ASL interpreters. These were outlined by Dr. Dennis Cokely (Director of the ASL interpretation program at Northeastern University) in the video presentation of the Region 1 Conference meeting at Albany, NY, “What’s in your knapsack”. Not sure if I have organized the 6 correctly as we couldn’t see the slides and he didn’t list them as he spoke. 1. Values. Have they been lost? Not all change is growth; not all movement is forward. What’s the meaningful common cause? 2. Relationships. Pivotal changes…

Automatic Captioning & Automatic Timing from Google
I had a pleasant surprise today as I was researching how social media technology supported d/D participation. As of November 2009, Google offers automatic captioning (uses the same voice recognition algorithms in Google Voice to automatically generate captions for video) and automatic timing service (attach a script without time codes and Google will do the rest for you!) in YouTube. So, if I watch a Spanish video on YouTube, I can simply click on the cc button and have Google transcribe it into English or any of the 51 language…

Deaf Coffee 11-26-2010
How long has it been that I haven’t seen BB, my Deaf ASL instructor? I took 2 ASL classes with her and then practiced sometimes with her at my corporate office. But we kept in touch via email and with Facebook, socializing became a cinch, a matter of clicking buttons and pressing keys. Thanksgiving break was a good time to meet up; everyone was relaxed. There were more people at Panera’s that night. BB was already there when I arrived, looking beautiful, unravaged by time. Straight blond hair, pinned up…
