Designing technical learning experiences at the intersection of corporate innovation and academic rigor
Homepage of Data Analytics for Insurance, a FutureLearn course co-created by Deakin University, FourthRev, and TAL.
Project Summary
Client: Deakin University via FourthRev
Completed: August 2023
Sector: Higher Education, EdTech, Corporate Training
Business Problem
Insurance professionals needed practical training in data analytics to make better, faster decisions in a highly regulated and data-driven industry. Traditional training offerings were too generic, too academic, or disconnected from real-world insurance applications.
Solution
As lead instructional designer, I directed the design and QA of a technical course co-created by FourthRev, Deakin University, and TAL. The course bridged industry and academia by combining hands-on tools, guided case studies, and applied learning strategies—preparing professionals to confidently use data analytics in complex decision-making scenarios.
My Roles and Responsibilities
Course Architecture & Strategy. Spearheaded course mapping with two additional LXDs to define the module flow, learning outcomes, and student journey on FutureLearn.
Content Quality Assurance. Reviewed and edited course storyboards for clarity, alignment, and copyright before handoff to platform production.
Multimedia Oversight. Supervised use and adaptation of FourthRev’s media library (motion graphics, H5Ps, video, static imagery) to fit instructional purpose.
SME Collaboration. Worked closely with a subject matter expert to ensure the technical accuracy and relevance of content related to insurance analytics.
LMS & Licensing Alignment. Partnered with Deakin’s instructional design and FutureLearn teams to finalize course layout, navigation, and copyright disclosures.
What I Learned
This project challenged me to synthesize enterprise learning goals with academic expectations and a learner-first experience design approach. Navigating global collaboration between Australian, UK, and U.S. teams also deepened my cross-cultural and cross-time-zone communication strategies.
Designing for both industry and university stakeholders sharpened my ability to deliver structured learning that meets the demands of accreditation, employer expectations, and real-world skill-building.
